What is a Bernedoodle?

First things first: let’s go over what a bernedoodle is.

A bernedoodle (sometimes referred to as a bernadoodle) is a combination of a Bernese mountain dog and a poodle. This breed is known for its intelligence, affection, sociability, and goofy, cheerful attitude. They get the clever goofiness of the poodle and the placid loyalty from the Bernese. They make the perfect companion dog and will be at your side no matter what. Their main job is being your best friend.

Benefits of the Breed

Temperament

One of the biggest reasons for owning a bernedoodle is their temperament is unbeatable. Overall, they are affectionate, loving, and the happiest dogs who love to interact with humans. They’re also often praised for their loyalty and protective nature. When you become their owner, they will bond well and won’t hold back their affection. As much as they love playing fetch and going on walks with you, a bernedoodle wants nothing more than to hang with you and snuggle on the couch after a long day.

Children Safe

If you’re thinking of a pet for your family, the bernedoodle is a wonderful choice to consider. The bernedoodle is known to make an excellent family pet! This breed inherits its gentleness from the Bernese mountain dog, which is dubbed the “gentle giant.” If you have children, the bernedoodle will get along well with them due to their playful nature. They will be a wonderful pet for your children to grow up with. Just remember to instruct children on how to correctly interact with dogs, especially if you’re considering getting a mini bernedoodle, as it could injure more easily.

They Make Excellent Service Dogs

Not only does their temperament make for good family dogs, but they also make for excellent service, therapy, or assistance dogs. They are intelligent dogs and are easy to train to suit service or therapy needs. As mentioned before, they are not only obedient and loyal but eager to please, so owners won’t feel alone or helpless with this breed around. This hybrid breed is especially great for patients with diabetes, life-threatening allergies, hearing impairment, and visual impairment.

Low Shedding Coat

This light-shedding breed is ideal for those with allergies who still want to own a dog. An F1 bernedoodle is a 50/50 mix and will likely have low to minimal shedding and are great for those with mild allergies. If you have stronger allergies, no worries, as F1B bernedoodles are 25% Bernese and 75% poodle. This pairing produces the most hypo-allergenic and non-shedding dogs.

If you’re considering getting a bernedoodle but want to ensure you’re not allergic, Alpine Bernedoodles is happy to help! If you’re in the Montrose, Colorado, area, our dog Marley is more than happy to be a test dog. Another option is a towel can be rubbed over one of our F1 and F1B bernedoodles and shipped to you. We’ve had success with this option for people with strong allergies. Please contact us if you’d like to try either of these options.

Variety of Sizes

Another great quality is this breed comes in a variety of different sizes. The benefit of different sizes is that dog owners can select what size suits their living circumstances or lifestyle. Sizes ranges include:

  • Medium/small standard: 45-75 lbs. and 18-24 in.
  • Miniature: 35-55 lbs. and 16-18 in.
  • Petite: 18-30 lbs. and 14-17 in.
  • Micro mini: 15-28 lbs. and 12-16 in.

It’s important to be aware that these are size ranges and not guarantees. For example, if you have your heart set on a mini bernedoodle, know they can be a little bigger or smaller than the size listed.

Lifespan

Another reason to get a bernedoodle is their longer lifespan. As much as we want our dogs to live forever, we, unfortunately, aren’t allotted that much time. However, unlike the Bernese mountain dog’s lifespan of 6-8 years, the bernedoodle’s lifespan is around 12-17. That extra time with your best friend is always valuable!
